Visas, Citizenship and Tax Residence
Faced with the growing demand of Brazilians for citizenships and residencies in Portugal, Turim MFO promoted a webinar to talk about visas, citizenship and tax residency in the European country. The event, mediated by our co-CEO EDUARDO ALMEIDA, was attended by the expert in Tax Law, Filipe Romao, partner of Uría Menéndez – Proença de Carvalho.
Romão explained that Portugal has facilitated access to citizenship for children, grandchildren and married or united with Portuguese.
“For grandchildren, it was not possible to obtain citizenship for a while, as it was necessary to have effective ties with the Portuguese community. The situation continues like this, but now the Portuguese language is considered to prove effective ties with the community of Portugal”, said the expert.
Romão also explained how the process of obtaining Portuguese citizenship works through proof of Sephardic ancestry.
“There is a list of names likely to fall into Sephardic ancestry. It takes an opinion from a genealogist, based on documentation and family data, to verify if there is in fact such ancestry. Afterwards, an opinion is issued by the Jewish community in Lisbon. Based on this, this issue becomes a simple administrative process”, completed Romão.
Gustavo Lutfi and Isabela Faria from Turim’s Wealth Planning also participated in the webinar.
